Classic Causes of Fingernail Fungus

Those who have worked around elderly people often know what fingernail fungus looks like, as many elderly people struggle with finding the right fingernail fungus treatment to cure their problem. Those who are young and who believe that only the elderly have to worry about fingernail fungus, however, are mistaken, as many younger people have to search treatments as well as older people, but often don’t know why they are susceptible to the condition.

Where Fungus Lives

If you get fingernail fungus, you most likely get it due to a fungus that loves living in dark, moist places. These fungi are classified as dermatophytes and are the most common cause of both toenail and fingernail fungus. Often, once someone gets fingernail fungus and learns how long it takes for a product to solve the problem, they will do everything they can to stay away from warm, moist places, such as a pool area or even your shower, but avoiding these places doesn’t necessarily mean that you will be able to avoid having to look for one in the future, as once you get the condition you are much more likely to get it again.

Who’s At Risk?

It’s not just the elderly who are at risk for getting fingernail fungus, but the elderly are at a greater risk than the general population. As we age, the blood circulation in your body gets worse, meaning that the oxygen isn’t able to circulate through the body as well as it used to be able to, nor are the antibodies that fight infection able to travel where they have to in order to do their job. Also, the older we get, the longer we allow the fungi to build up in the body, making it much more difficult for options to get rid of the fungi, as there is much more buildup of the pest.

This doesn’t mean, however, that younger people are exempt from getting fingernail fungus. In fact, millions of younger people find that they have to visit a doctor to request fingernail fungus treatment every year. And, though scientists don’t know why, it is more often men who have to request a cure than women. Those who smoke are at a much higher risk for getting fingernail fungus than those who are non-smokers due to the reduced blood circulation that occurs when you have been smoking for awhile. If you have diabetes, you are also at a higher risk, as well as if you are the type of person who is repeatedly gets Athlete’s foot.

What it boils down to is that no one is safe from fingernail fungus. The best thing to do, once you believe that you have the condition, is to get a finger nail fungus treatment as soon as you can, so that you can fight off the fungi before it causes any further damage.
