Social Causes of Nail Fungus

Nail fungus, whether it is toenail or fingernail, is a common affliction among Americans. Estimates are that between 2 percent and 14 percent of the populace suffer from nail fungus infections. People as they age are far more susceptible to the disease than younger folks. A very small percentage of children usually develop the problem, while those over the age of 60 range in the 25 to 40 percentile for being bothered by it.

Shoes That Are Too Tight

Causes of nail fungus that can occur in social situations or are due to a social environment include wearing shoes that are too tight for your feet. A lady or gentleman is apt to wear shoes that are fashionable and trendy for a night out as opposed to sensible shoes that might be more comfortable for your feet. Shoes that are too tight can cause cuts and damage to feet that make conditions ripe for allowing a fungal infection to move in.

Social Situations That May Trigger The Malady

Other nail fungus causes that can be attributed to social situations include the possibility of contracting HIV/AIDS (which wreaks havoc on the body’s immune system needed to fight infection), bacteria from community swimming pools, group hot tubs, or locker rooms, and excess perspiration from extreme physical activity.

Pools, Gyms, Public Showers, Hot Tubs

Community swimming pools, and shower areas in gyms and fitness centers, make prime breeding ground for bacteria that can become the causes of nail fungus. It is very important when exercising at one of these facilities to always wear shoes around the pool’s edge, into the shower, and around the locker/dressing rooms. Wear sandals, or you can purchase special shoes designed just for use in public showers, when walking in these areas. Do not go barefoot. Bacteria and germs are plentiful in public places and can easily attach to your skin. Parties that include large hot tubs with several people carry the same risk, and shoes should always be worn when trekking to and from the hot tub.

Extreme Physical Exercise

Social activities can also include running marathons, bicycling, or any kind of extreme physical activity where perspiration is going to drench your body and possibly build up in your shoes and on your feet. Proper shoes should always be worn – the right size with a comfortable fit. It is also very important to wash your feet and hands to keep them clean. Drying is also important as bacteria breeds in moisture.

Some individuals suffering with this affliction may be tempted to coat it, or try to cover it, with nail polish. This would only put you at risk of greater infection as the coating would hold the infection in tighter and allow it to grow stronger. It is best to seek medical treatment right away.

Nail fungus causes can be varied and treatment requires medication to rid your nails and your body of this infection. In rare cases, surgery may also be an option. Most cases, however, can be effectively treated with prescription medication so it is best to consult your doctor as soon as possible.
